No, it’s not Populous (everyone who played in the 80s and 90s knows it by name!), and it’s not Curiosity…
Curiosity was the game where you had to dismantle the elements of a cube to win a mysterious prize if you could get inside. This was (also) hyped to death by Molyneux (who started this strategy during Fable…), and as it turned out, the prize wasn’t very big: the winner could become a god in Godus, as Molyneux’s originally promised life-changing prize turned out to be nothing of the sort…
Godus was quickly abandoned, and then in 2016, Molyneux’s then-studio 22cans came along and released a new game, Godus Wars. It was slightly different in terms of gameplay and equally neglected in terms of support. But both games stayed on Steam for years… but that’s all over now, as the studio has announced on Valve’s digital platform that it is removing both games from the available titles (The Crew got the same thing the other day; we reported it!).
“22cans would like to share some important news regarding our games, Godus and Godus Wars. Unfortunately, due to an upcoming technical change at Amazon Web Services that will affect our ability to serve necessary game files to new users, these titles will be removed from the Steam store. Please be assured that existing players will continue to enjoy these games without interruption. We sincerely appreciate the incredible support we have received from our players over the past decade and thank you all from the bottom of our hearts,” the announcement reads.
We looked at the number of players in the Steam chat. In September 2013, at launch, Godus had an average of 1116 players and peaked at 6473. This has halved in a month. Today it has less than five (5!!!) players on average, with a high of 13 last month. The details of Godus Wars are not loading, but at the time of writing, literally no one was playing it, and the average for the last 30 days was 0.1 players…
