TECH NEWS – While we’re on the subject of the Samsung Galaxy S24 leaks, let’s also remember the 2024 iPhone handsets in the spirit of parity…
Apple launched its 3-nanometer A17 Pro system-on-a-chip (SoC) in the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max handsets, marking the first time it didn’t use the Bionic name (the Base and Plus models stayed on the A16 Bionic), but the situation could change significantly next year, as the leaked iOS 18 code hints that all four iPhone 16 models will get the latest chipset, the A18, and there may also be a distinction between the Base and Pro models.
According to MacRumors, there are references to four unreleased iPhone models in the iOS 18 update codenamed Crystal (D47: iPhone 16, D48: iPhone 16 Plus, D93: iPhone 16 Pro, D94: iPhone 16 Pro Max). It seems that Apple has either dropped the Ultra designation or will introduce it later. All four new phones will use the t8140 SoC, currently codenamed Tahiti. The SoC in the base and Plus models of the iPhone 16 is codenamed D4y, while the Pro and Pro Max models run the chip internally as D9x. There’s no way all four variants will get the same technology, as it wouldn’t be worth it for the company, making the Pro models less attractive.
The base A18 chip could be a renamed A17 Pro in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. The A18 Pro could be the name of the more powerful chip, and for manufacturing Apple could use TSMC’s N3E process, which has a higher yield rate and a more affordable cost per wafer compared to N3B. However, we don’t know anything about the processor and graphics chip. No wonder, since the phones will not be released until the fall of 2024…
Also, MacRumors has reported that the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max could get a tetraprism lens (the iPhone 15 Pro has the same 3x zoom as the 14 Pro Max), which is in line with analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s prediction, and The Elec also reported this recently. The iPhone 15 Pro Max has a tetraprism telephoto lens, which is a folded glass structure that reflects light multiple times. Optically, it can zoom up to 5x. The iPhone 15 Pro reportedly did not receive the tetraprism telephoto lens upgrade due to its smaller size. The sensor needs some space to work behind the camera module, which is one of the reasons why only the iPhone 15 Pro Max received it, but that could change next year. The company plans to make the iPhone 16 with a 6.3-inch display and the iPhone 16 Pro Max with a 6.9-inch display, so the devices will have plenty of room for the new tetraprism camera sensor. The Capture button on the phone will be able to record video, but other possible features are unknown.
So there’s something to get excited about here, too…
