Geralt Of Rivia’s Voice Says There’s A Danger Behind AI-Created Voices

Doug Cockle says the problem is not the AI itself, but the way some people use it.

If you’ve played any of the three The Witcher games, Geralt’s voice will be familiar. Geralt’s voice was provided by Doug Cockle (his performance was spectacular!), and now in an interview with IGN he has stated that the use of AI is inevitable (which in itself is not a bad thing), but if voice actors don’t take the necessary steps to manage how they use their voices, there could be a huge danger.

“AI is inevitable, and developers are going to use AI. We’re not 100% sure what that means. They’re already doing it in different ways, filling in backgrounds, NPC voices and things like that, which is unfortunate because those voices were all human at one point, and the voices are all modeled after humans. So they’ve taken someone’s voice, put it in their database, digitized it, and are using it to say things that the person never said. There’s something unethical about that, and that’s why there’s a lot of debate about it,” Cockle said.

He was asked by an AI company a few years ago if they could use his voice as Geralt, but he said no. This was not because he was against AI in general, but because “people are ripping off their voices. They get no financial compensation and have no control over the content. This could be a growing problem for voice actors, who provide the voices of the main characters. “This is where AI gets dangerous: Fake news, false news, false opinions. We’re seeing it now with politicians. People are putting things out there. So AI is not the problem. It’s the people who are using AI,” Cockle added.

It is true that the greatest danger lies in misuse, and that there are two sides to artificial intelligence. The good and harmless use contrasts with the harmful misuse…
