MOVIE NEWS – One Avengers actor seems to have accepted Quentin Tarantino’s criticism of the Marvel movie franchise, but not in a negative way.
Captain America actor Chris Evans has responded to Quentin Tarantino’s controversial comments about Marvel Studios’ MCU franchise and its effect on actors.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a media franchise consisting of live-action adaptations of characters and concepts from the pages of Marvel Comics, including Captain America. The franchise has become one of the largest in the world, with 32 theatrical films currently released and more than 10 in development, as well as several other television and streaming projects in the pipeline. Despite the huge success and popularity that has come with it, Tarantino insisted that Marvel actors are not real movie stars and cast a shadow over the whole franchise and the ‘Marvelisation’ of the industry, although he made it clear that he did not mean to insult the actors themselves.
While Tarantino’s comments were controversial at the time, supported and rejected by his contemporaries, it seems that one iconic Marvel actor has turned around to see things from his perspective. Evans (who has previously stated that he’d rather play Johnny Storm again than Captain America) shared his thoughts on the subject, and that he agrees with Tarantino. “That was the beauty of working on the Marvel movies. You never really had to be in the spotlight,” Evans said in an interview with GQ. “Sometimes not even in your own films. Quentin Tarantino said that the other day and I thought, you know, he’s right. The character is the star. You’re there, but you don’t feel the weight of it.
Tarantino has been notoriously critical of the newer film media, insisting that this is the worst era in Hollywood history, not least because of what he calls the Marvel-isation of the industry, which puts long-running franchise characters at the centre and leaves creators and performers second fiddle to their own work. While Evans may agree, this is far from the consensus at Marvel. In the same interview, MCU boss Kevin Feige disagreed with the esteemed actor, saying: “I think [Chris] said that to himself, and I think a lot of the Avengers, including Robert, would say that to themselves, which was actually very helpful to the process. But in some cases, including Chris, it’s not entirely true”.
Feige is not alone in his disagreement, as Samuel Jackson also hit back at Tarantino’s Marvel remarks when they were made, citing the late Chadwick Boseman as an example, telling The View hosts (and reminding Tarantino) that “it takes an actor to be these particular characters, and the mark of movie stardom has always been, what, asses in seats? Jackson was famously successful working with Tarantino. He is perhaps in a better position to deal with his critics than most of the actors in the MCU or any other major franchise who are the subject of his ire.
Given Tarantino’s firm statement that he will never join the MCU, there is little hope of any change on that front, regardless of how the franchise evolves, for better or worse, over its likely long lifespan. At the very least, the iconic filmmaker can claim to have converted one of many as he continues to pursue his own creative vision and Marvel Studios continues to produce its own.
The Captain America movies from Marvel Studios are available on Disney Plus.
