It’s Time For Mario To Get A 3D Game Again

It’s been a long time since Super Mario Odyssey (over six years!), and while there’s a very good 2D title coming to Switch this year (Super Mario Bros. Wonder), we shouldn’t forget about the third dimension.

If it’s Mario, you’re usually going to get a quality game, whether it’s a 2D or 3D title. Super Mario Bros. Wonder was a step back to 2D, but that’s where it all started, but its new gameplay mechanics made it a particularly excellent game for this fall’s Nintendo Switch exclusive. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe got its final content updates, and Super Mario RPG Remake wasn’t bad (but it wasn’t perfect), so it was a great year for the mustachioed plumber.

If you don’t count Super Mario 3D World: Bowser’s Wrath, there hasn’t been a 3D Mario adventure since Super Mario Odyssey. In Odyssey, Cappy’s ability (to take control of your enemies) added a unique twist to the game, and Mario’s appearance was customizable. But, as mentioned, it was released in 2017, and since then, anyone who wanted to has played the game. But Super Mario Bros. Wonder also had other additions besides the Wonder Flower, if the Wonder Flower wasn’t eventually thrown in with a capital N. The Bubble Flower, Drill Mushroom, Grappling Vine, and Parachute Cap all give Mario new abilities.

The Bubble Flower overwhelms enemies and produces disposable bubbles that you can jump from. This can be used in a very creative way in a 3D book. This could also be used in a new area, as would be expected in a new 3D game, along with new gameplay twists. Super Mario Sunshine innovated with F.L.U.D.D., Super Paper Mario innovated with dimensional flipping, and if a new 3D platformer were on the cards, Nintendo could continue the tradition.

The Japanese company should keep the Mario momentum going. The Switch’s successor could be a great tool to do so.
