The Poles want to keep their independence, so it would be useless for richer companies to try.
Adam Kiciński, who will take up another position at CD Projekt (currently CEO) on January 1, spoke to the Polish publication Parkiet about the company’s plans. Currently, 330 people are working on the project codenamed Polaris, which includes The Witcher 4. By mid-2024, the number of employees is expected to increase to 400, and the Orion project will be launched later that year. This is the codename for the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, and its concept phase is complete and its development team is still being formed, but it will be mainly led by the new North American studio that has opened in Boston.
A project called Sirius is also in the works at The Molasses Flood, and it’s related to The Witcher, but it’s not a new episode, it’s a remake of the first game. (Note that CDP is no longer using their proprietary technology, REDengine, and is instead developing on Unreal Engine 5). Returning to Polaris, Kiciński refuted rumors that development is at an advanced stage and that a release date will be announced soon. After the repeated postponements of Cyberpunk 2077, it was decided to wait until later to announce the release date of each game in order to properly run the marketing campaign.
As for acquisitions, Kiciński said that they have no plans for anyone to buy CD Projekt, as they have worked their whole lives to be in this position, which will improve in the coming years. The company also has no plans to acquire others just to improve their financial results, so we won’t hear about an acquisition like The Molasses Flood for example.
So they want to stay independent and they don’t plan to get their hands on others. Hopefully the scandalous start of Cyberpunk 2077 was a sobering enough slap in the face for the Polish team.
