Furiosa is also said to canonize the 2015 Mad Max game. This could be a good excuse for Avalanche to develop a sequel or spin-off…
Mad Max is not necessarily an IP ripe for potential sequels. At least not without repeating the same rusty wreck derby and treacherous dunes ad infinitum… However, as long as there are new adventures to tell and reimagining of the universe, there will always be an audience for the rugged wanderer and his journey across the wasteland.
This was also the case with Avalanche Mad Max, and the IP got its most popular entry with George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road later that year.
This opened a new path for the character. Furiosa, the prequel to Fury Road, finally hits theatres on May 24. Interestingly, while Avalanche’s open-world Mad Max game had seemingly no connection to the accompanying licensed films, Furiosa’s script makes the game canon by referencing Chumbucket. Even if this was just a discarded easter egg, it could be of great importance to the Avalanche. Because it can be a catalyst for a sequel or spin-off game…
Avalanche’s Mad Max has always deserved a sequel
Chumbucket dies at the end of Mad Max, so – assuming the reference to the character is legitimate and confirms the game’s canon – it seems that Furiosa would be a prequel to the game in the same way that Fury Road was.
Trying to determine when the game might land in the timeline might be irrelevant, depending on how significant this reference is thought to be, and there’s a chance Furiosa’s own iteration of Chumbucket isn’t meant to be an adaptation of a character from the game.
However, this would be a rather strange take. Two different characters with the same name are unnecessarily confusing. Either way, whether Mad Max is far from the story Furiosa wants to tell, or it correlates pretty strongly, it would be exciting if Avalanche got the chance to develop a second Mad Max game.
The only problem now is that a new game wouldn’t be so timely in its release window to be released near the movie that shares its IP. Unless you’re supposed to produce it next year. However, a new game could still capitalize on Furiosa’s potential success in the next few years if it was already quietly and secretly in development.
The sequel can be open-ended, and that’s fine
Mad Max left Max’s story completely open-ended, and that’s good for Avalanche because you can continue the story whenever you want. Any new Mad Max game could tell the segmented story of Max’s harrowing adventures. It would be hard to shake things up dramatically or surprisingly. But it would be great to see how Avalanche could continue the story and world-building alongside Miller’s films.
If the two are to intertwine, then that’s even more fuel to the fire of possibilities, because a new Mad Max game could specifically cross over the characters, locations and events of the excellent film works.
Maybe the next Mad Max game could be a sort of Furiosa sequel, with her as the playable main character. It’s time for the franchise to come full circle in a meaningful way. The Mad Max saga doesn’t necessarily require one-to-one cinematic connections. But original games set around the events of the movies could develop it even more…
