This year’s debut series ‘Apples Never Fall’ is adapted from Liane Moriarty’s novel, listed on the New York Times bestseller list. The story focuses on the seemingly perfect Delaney family, whose life takes a new direction following a mysterious event. The main characters, Stan (Sam Neill) and Joy (Annette Bening), former tennis players who decide to retire after a successful career to enjoy life with their four adult children (Alison Brie, Jake Lacy, Conor Merrigan-Turner, Essie Randles). The series’ writer and executive producer, Melanie Marnich, stated that ‘Apples Never Fall’ mixes real-life inspiration with imaginative elements while uncovering deep human emotions and conflicts. Marnich highlighted the complexity, intelligence, and vulnerability of the Delaney family, which inspired her to adapt this book. The series revolves around family relationships, the challenges of long marriages, and the quest for self-actualization, gradually peeling back the idealized image of the working mother and wife.

David Heyman, another executive producer of the series, called Moriarty’s novel the author’s best work, expressing pride in being part of its screen adaptation. He emphasized the story’s diverse and complex characters, and the way family members’ secrets slowly come to light. According to Heyman, the series is sometimes funny, other times touching, and always captivating, brought to life by the outstanding performances of the cast, including Annette Bening and Sam Neill, realistically portraying the novel’s world.
