Compared to another superhero live service game, Rocksteady’s new title had far fewer players on its first day…
According to SteamDB, an independent Steam data aggregation site, Marvel’s Avengers from Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montréal (the latter of which we recently wrote about kicking out nearly 100 people and reportedly canceling a Deus Ex) had 29,916 players on its launch day. In contrast, Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League only managed 13,459! That’s not even half as many as the Avengers game, which is no longer available for purchase! And there is no early access bias, as both titles had early access periods.
That might have changed if Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League and Gotham Knights had swapped places. WB Games Montréal’s game was an original story in which Ra’s Al Ghul defeated Batman, while Rocksteady’s project was set in the Arkhamverse (the same world as their previous Batman: Arkham games). Gotham Knights could become a new franchise, but at this point we don’t see much chance of that happening, and it could be a one-off story.
But it could be connected to the Arkhamverse, as WB Games Montréal was previously involved in the development of Batman: Arkham Origins! At the end of Batman: Arkham Knight, Bruce Wayne activated the Knightfall Protocol, seemingly killing himself to protect his loved ones. It would have been logical for the Gotham Knights to continue in that vein. Except that Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League inexplicably continued it. Here, we’re fighting a brainwashed Justice League, and Batman is one of them, brainwashed by Brainiac.
This was a significant change from the Arkham Batman (because it’s the same character we saw in Rocksteady’s previous games), and perhaps that’s why it would have been better if THIS game had been given a completely original world…
