The Xbox CEO addressed several issues in an interview with The Verge.
The site’s Tom Warren asked Spencer if there would be a normal Xbox Cloud Gaming app on iOS after the Digital Markets Act in Europe forced Apple to open up the App Store. To which Spencer replied: “There is no way for us to monetize Xbox Cloud Gaming on iOS. I think the proposal that Apple put forward – and I thought Sarah Bond’s comments on this were right – doesn’t go far enough to open up. In fact, you could say they’re going in the opposite direction in some ways, but they definitely don’t go far enough to open up competition on the world’s biggest gaming platform.”
Still, Spencer said that Microsoft is still interested in opening a mobile Xbox store as soon as possible, and that Candy Crush, Call of Duty, Diablo Immortal, and Minecraft could make room on iOS and Android. And what about Game Pass? With 34 million subscribers, the service is not a primary focus for Microsoft: “Our goal is not to make everyone a Game Pass subscriber. I’ve said many times that maybe 10-15 percent of our content and service revenue is subscriber revenue. It’s a good business for us today, Game Pass, but in no way is there a plan that says, ‘Okay, everybody has to be a Game Pass subscriber. We don’t need to have a discrete focus just on Game Pass, we should really just be thinking about the health of the overall business on Xbox.”
Warren also wrote that Gears of War, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and the new DOOM have all been floated as possible multiplatform titles, but no final decision has been made. The strategy will evolve, so there will be some interesting decisions about Xbox exclusivity. Bond reportedly said inside the company that all ads are Xbox, and Spencer wrote in an internal memo: “We have a different vision for the future of gaming. A future where players have a consistent experience across devices. A future where players can easily discover a wide variety of games with a diverse range of business models. A future where more creators are empowered to realize their creative vision, reach a global audience, unite their communities, and thrive commercially. A future where every screen is an Xbox.”
Jeff Grubb recently said that Gears of War and Halo could be multiplatform. Maybe Halo won’t be…
