TECH NEWS – There are a few things that the next generation AR headset needs to deliver or it won’t go mainstream. But what exactly are they?
In a post on Medium, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo summarized the factors that Apple’s second model of the Vision Pro will need to later fill. Even in small steps at first, but the design could be tweaked. Not suddenly, but gradually as new models come out. (We recently wrote that it could take up to four generations of the headset to become a mass product).
According to the analyst, the Apple Vision Pro is not a mainstream product because, unlike the iPhone, it can only appeal to a very niche audience. Apps, pricing, and convenience are key to its success. In terms of apps, for example, there is no Google or Netflix on visionOS, which limits the headset’s functionality and makes the product slower to catch on than it should be. Then there’s the price: currently, the minimum you have to pay for an Apple product is $3,500, and you can pay up to $5,000 for the most expensive version with all the extras.
Although there are rumors of a cheaper model based on the iPhone instead of Mac foundations, with lower resolution, cheaper displays, the price is really important. The cheaper it is, the wider the audience it can reach. Finally, the comfort factor is mentioned by Ming-Chi Kuo. The headband may not be comfortable for everyone right now, but it is not the only thing that can cause problems for users. The heavy device puts a lot of weight on the user’s face, so it should be lightened in the future as this would also help to make it more comfortable to wear.
Rumor has it that the cheaper Apple Vision Pro won’t be released until the end of 2025, so the company still has plenty of time to fine-tune it (if it’s actually being made and the Cupertino-based tech company hasn’t already moved on to the next generation). One thing is for sure, Apple’s task is not easy!
