TECH NEWS – Some people are fed up with cloud storage restrictions…
The company is pretty stingy with iCloud, so it’s no surprise that some disgruntled users have filed a class-action lawsuit against Apple. According to the document, the tech giant is pretty much tipping the scales in its favor, as certain iPhone and iPad files can only be stored via the iCloud platform. This is not the only problem, according to Bloomberg Law, as the company’s storage space is also ridiculously small, with only 5 gigabytes available for free. To give just one example, Google Drive offers three times more free storage, and 15 gigabytes of storage is much more than that.
“Apple has jacked up its iCloud prices to the point where the service is generating almost pure profit. Apple’s ability to maintain these prices is a testament to its monopoly power. Apple device owners get 5GB of iCloud storage for free, but as Apple’s iCloud revenues show, most users find this insufficient for their storage needs and purchase an additional iCloud storage plan. There is no technological or security justification for Apple to require the use of iCloud for restricted files. Apple is making this distinction solely to limit competition and favor its iCloud product over competing cloud platforms,” the document reads.
The free 5GB was announced by Steve Jobs at WWDC 2011 and has not been touched by Apple since. The document is 37 pages long and was prepared by the law firm Hagens Berman. The firm represents Julianna Felix Gamboa. As 9to5mac reports, the same firm has filed a $560 million class-action lawsuit against Apple for price-fixing Apple Books.
It is likely that Apple will try to circumvent the court by increasing the free storage to 10GB while leaving the paid tiers unchanged.
