Remedy Entertainment: They Want More Frequent Sequels To Their Two IPs!

According to the Finnish studio, they would be better off if their own intellectual properties received sequels more regularly, which could also raise the possibility that the balance between quantity and quality is different, i.e. Remedy could be overdoing it.

Remedy Entertainment recently announced its results for the last fiscal quarter, the period between October and December 2023. Due to the growing gaming industry, it is not surprising that Alan Wake 2 became the Finnish team’s best-selling game even in the busiest release period, but still they made less money and profit because more investments went into their other projects, and the impairment costs related to the reboot of their free-to-play project Vanguard also played a role in the €7.2 million minus. Vanguard is now operating under a different name, Kestrel.

But don’t worry: Remedy has confirmed that Alan Wake 2 has almost recouped Epic Games Publishing’s investment, so if it pays off, the game will be a major moneymaker for the studio this year. Tero Virtala, CEO of Remedy, also talked about their plans now that they have not only the rights to Alan Wake, but also Control in their hands:

“With Alan Wake and Control, we now have two established franchises, and our goal is to grow them into franchises that have high brand recognition, a steadily growing user base, a more regular cadence of sequels, and the ability to generate high levels of revenue and profit. Control 2 continued in the proof of concept phase. In the fourth quarter, the team focused on world building and combat.

Codename Condor continued in production readiness, with the team focusing on combat and game mechanics. Both games have proven to be fun and engaging to play. Max Payne 1&2 Remake also continued in production readiness. The team made significant progress throughout the year. Max Payne 1&2 Remake will be a major new game with great potential, made possible by a development budget similar to that of Alan Wake 2. We expect the Condor, Control 2 and Max Payne 1&2 Remake projects to move into the next stages of development in the first half of 2024,” said Virtala.

Remedy left 505 Games with the Control IP because their ambitions have grown since the release of the first game and they are looking for a different business model and partner. And they know they will find it.
