Rockstar Games’ title may not arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox series at a later date (and the PlayStation 5 Pro will reportedly be in stores by then), but a reliable source tells us that the situation is not that bad.
A few days ago, Kotaku reported that Grand Theft Auto VI could slip to late 2025, possibly early 2026. Now, however, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier (who previously wrote for Kotaku) has asked sources inside Rockstar what the situation is. The jewel in Take-Two’s crown (the publisher recently bought Gearbox Entertainment Company from Embracer Group) has essentially shrugged off the rumors, so there may not be much chance of a delay… though it’s also possible that the studio is just hiding the truth and will still resort to a forced march through development, as we heard with Red Dead Redemption 2.
Grand Theft Auto V has sold more than 195 million copies over the past decade and a half, and only Minecraft has done better among paid (premium) games. Originally scheduled for release in the spring of 2013, it was not released until September 17 of that year for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Red Dead Redemption 2, which has already sold more than 60 million copies, has been delayed twice: originally scheduled for late 2017, it was pushed back to spring 2018 and then released on October 26, 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
According to Kotaku’s article, Take-Two’s stock value has dropped somewhat, but Rockstar is pushing for office work, requiring all of its 2,000 employees to stop working from home during the final stages of Grand Theft Auto VI’s development in order to increase productivity and improve safety.
The official release date for Grand Theft Auto VI remains 2025.
