The Finnish studio still has its sights set on turning Alan Wake and Control into bigger franchises, and that’s why they’ve reshuffled the current management team.
Remedy Entertainment has announced that Christopher Schmitz, the current Chief Operating Officer, will be leaving the company as of May 31st. Mikael Kasurinen has been promoted to Creative Director, the same position as Sami Järvi, known as Sam Lake, and will become a member of the management team. Tero Virtala is CEO, Markus Mäki is chief product officer, Lake and Kasurinen are the two creative directors, Terhi Kauppi is chief financial officer, Johannes Paloheimo is chief commercial director and Mika Vehkala is chief technology director.
Virtala said of the changes in a statement: “Christopher Schmitz has served in a variety of roles over the past five years, helping to build the foundation of our multi-project model and developing game project management and selected support functions. I would like to thank him and wish him well in his next endeavors. I would like to welcome Mikael Kasurinen to our core management team. He is a highly respected, experienced and accomplished creative leader. Kasurinen and Järvi have worked together on a number of games and have complementary world-class skills. With this arrangement, we can ensure the necessary focus on growing Alan Wake and Control into larger franchises, as well as the right kind of creative leadership and support that all of our game teams can benefit from.
Kasurinen joined Remedy in 2001 (!), left in 2010, and returned in 2014. He was a level designer on Max Payne 2, worked as lead game designer on Alan Wake, and was director on Control, a position he will continue to hold on the sequel. The sequel to Control is in concept, and Remedy said in March that it expects to move into the next phase of development soon.
Since the Finns want to develop a shared Remedy universe, it’s understandable that they want to develop both Alan Wake and Control into a larger IP.
