Nintendo Switch 2: Even Higher Resolution When Docked?

Nintendo’s yet-to-be-announced next-generation console (which we don’t even know the official name of yet) will not only have a higher resolution in handheld mode, but will also be dockable in case you want to play on the couch while hooked up to a larger display.

A Chinese manufacturer, Mobapad, recently posted new details about the Nintendo Switch 2 on Facebook (that post has since been edited and we’ve reported what it said), but the company has also posted a few things about the Big N’s new, yet-to-be-unveiled hardware on its website. According to them, not only will the handheld look similar to its predecessor, but the dock will too, and it will be technologically advanced under the hood. Performance will be improved and it will be capable of 4K resolution, which is understandable since rumors suggest that the successor to the Nintendo Switch will support Nvidia’s DLSS (but not DLSS 3 or Frame Generation; Ray Reconstruction will be supported, so ray tracing seems assured on the platform).

The Joy-Con controllers will have metal SL and SR buttons, according to Mobapad, and there will also be new buttons on the left and right sides of the controller. There will also be a new button below the home button that will be designed for functionality, but it hasn’t been specified what it will do. Following the example of Sony and Microsoft, it’s likely that this new button with unknown functionality will have some sort of community function, but we wouldn’t speculate on what the left/right buttons might do. So there will be more buttons. Hopefully not too many of them.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is said to be on par with the previous generation of consoles in terms of performance, thanks to the Nvidia Tegra T239 chip and eight A78 Cortex-A processor cores. The hybrid platform is rumored to hit stores in late 2024 or early 2025. All we know for sure is that when this much is leaked about a yet-to-be-announced console (a la PlayStation 5 Pro), it has to be true.
