While Rare is working on Sea of Thieves (the live service game seems to be popular on PlayStation 5), there’s another game that the studio announced years ago that has yet to be released…yet.
Everwild, which was announced back in November 2019 at X0 in the British capital of London. The trade event has since been canceled by Microsoft, but here we had confirmation of the project’s existence. The game was shown again in a teaser video at the Xbox Games Showcase 2020. And that’s where the flood of information about the game stopped, which means it’s been almost four years since anything has been said about it by either Rare or Microsoft.
In the latest episode of the Xbox Two podcast, Windows Central editor Jez Corden said that he believes Everwild is still in development, so there’s no need to worry that Rare has canceled the project. He doesn’t know much more about the game than that it will be some sort of online multiplayer title. So they could continue the Sea of Thieves formula with Everwild. Maybe the studio will finally show something at this year’s Xbox Games Showcase because it’s about time, but Corden isn’t sure if he’ll show up at Microsoft’s event because he thinks it might be too early to reveal the game again. (They could be making the same mistake CD Projekt RED made with Cyberpunk 2077…)
Rare’s action-adventure game (if it keeps the genre, because after the silence it wouldn’t be surprising if it was changed during the four years of silence) already existed in concept form in 2014. It is therefore a big surprise that Corden thinks it might be too early to present it to the public again. Wasn’t a decade enough time for Rare to make something presentable out of the IP?
However, this is just a rumor, so it’s not official.
