BioWare’s task will not be easy, as fans of the franchise will need something memorable and something of quality (while the former is subjective, the latter is something that Mass Effect: Andromeda, the fourth in the series, was not as refined).
In May, the last time we heard from the untitled new Mass Effect, the voice of the female Shepard, Jennifer Hale, said that neither Electronic Arts nor BioWare had approached her about providing her voice for a game again, so either we won’t be able to create a female protagonist, or if we do, she’ll have a different voice in the game announced at The Game Awards 2020.
Mass Effect 5 (not officially named yet) will reportedly not feature open worlds, but will return to the classic format. Windows Central editor Jez Corden talked about the new game, saying that this is not completely accurate information, but it stands as an industry rumor. So the scale of the new Mass Effect may not be as big as Mass Effect: Andromeda, but players will get a more focused, polished experience from BioWare.
And ultimately, this may be the right approach, as it doesn’t deviate too much from the formula that players are used to, so more time can be spent on less detail in development. This might even allow the Quarian race, which was left out of Mass Effect: Andromeda to reappear in the new installment, which will surely be preceded by Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, which is much closer to the finish line, and BioWare doesn’t want to rush development and release (which the studio did with Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem).
None of this is official yet. Hopefully, BioWare and Electronic Arts will have more to say about the new Mass Effect later in June. At least the name of the game could be confirmed. That would be a good start.
