The legendary id Software returns to the hellish world of DOOM with a new shooter, The Dark Ages, for PC, Xbox Series, and PS5.
We’ve heard rumours before, and the Xbox Games Showcase confirmed them. The new DOOM game, DOOM: The Dark Ages, was officially unveiled at XGS 2024. It also received an impressive trailer (see below), which already gave us a glimpse of some important new features.
Perhaps most noticeable is the open world, or at least the commitment to open scenarios, which moves away from the linear levels of previous episodes of the saga.
The Dark Ages, developed by id Software, takes us back to the bloody DOOM universe to once again face endless waves of demons in a variety of breathtaking environments. The Doom Slayer’s arsenal of weapons has been expanded with new tools of death and destruction, such as the spiked spear or the shield with the morning star. The entire game is somewhat reminiscent of FromSoftware’s titles in its visual style and atmosphere, of course with real (modern) DOOM gameplay.
All New in DOOM: The Dark Ages
“You are the DOOM Slayer, the legendary demon-killing warrior and the super weapon in this never-before-seen dark and sinister medieval war against Hell,” reads the official description of the new DOOM. The new battlefield contains more enemies than ever before, which promises even more intense and frenetic shooting.
“DOOM: The Dark Ages’ cosmic-scale conflict calls for the heaviest ordnance possible, and the Slayer heeds.”
Another novelty is that you can fight giant demons while hiding in a mecha or even riding a dragon. It’s true, the scale of the new DOOM promises to be colossal. “Enter the cockpit of your Atlan – a daunting skyscraper-sized mech capable of toppling Hell’s behemoths with titanic metal fists – and reclaim the skies aboard the Slayer’s Mecha Dragon, strapped to the jaws with jet engines and overwhelming firepower.”
Pending further details, DOOM: The Dark Ages has been confirmed for release in 2025 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5. The game will be available on Game Pass from day one.
