PS5 lead developer Mark Cerny has hinted that he never wants to retire and says Clint Eastwood is a pretty good role model…
One of the most influential people who created the PS4 and PS5 is Mark Cerny, the current chief engineer of the PlayStation 5. If you’ve been following PlayStation news for years, you know that he’s a critical person at Sony. From a strong involvement in video game development, he became a leader in software and hardware design and development within PlayStation consoles. Sony is pleased with its work, and it looks like it will stay that way for a long time to come.
Mark Cerny gave an interview to Games Industry, where he clarified that players “overwhelmingly prefer games that are higher frame rates.”
However, in this conversation, he also talked about the future of consoles in the gaming industry. According to him, this is very promising. At one point in the conversation, the PS5 designer talks about Linus’ Tech Tips video (see below), in which the content creator tries to build a PC with the performance of Sony’s console for $500.
“They had to get a used motherboard. That was the only way that they could build a PlayStation 5 equivalent for a PlayStation 5 price. And if you’re using used parts… well you can get a used PlayStation 5 for eBay for $300- something,” he says, highlighting the value for money the PS5 offers. “I think as long as we continue to create that very nice package, the future of consoles is pretty bright,” he says.
Mark Cerny does not want to retire, he is preparing for the console revolution after the PS5
Mark Cerny turns 60 this year. However, his enthusiasm seems still there to continue making consoles. However, he fondly remembers the days when he was still designing video games. “I am not talking about what we would call today an indie game, but what we would have called a AAA game back in those days.”
“Something like Crash Bandicoot 2, where if you are running down the path and there’s an apple that you picked up, odds are I was the one that put it there,” he recalls.
“I see incredible games getting made. It’s not bittersweet at all to say that instead of creating games, I’ve chosen to support the creation of the games. Because there is really good work being done,” he says. According to him, a revolutionary technical leap is expected in the coming years. The latter will have a big impact on both the consoles’ performance and the games’ quality. He says about retirement: “It is something that’s a bit on my mind, but I do believe I have a bit of time left in this industry.” He also hinted that he doesn’t want to retire and said that Clint Eastwood is a pretty good role model.
