Is Mark Cerny Working On The Return Of Jak & Daxter?

The lead system architect of the PlayStation 4, the PlayStation Vita, and the PlayStation 5 might be working on bringing back a bigger PlayStation franchise from the past.

On Thursday, Microsoft showed a ton of games during the Xbox Gams Showcase, but in their case, we don’t know if they still have unannounced surprises. (We’d say they do: rumours have pointed at an August event where they will announce the Xbox Series S, the smaller next-gen Xbox, codenamed Lockhart.) It’s Sony’s turn, and we have already heard that they will have another show in August.

However, it won’t be called PlayStation 5: The Future of Gaming. Instead, it’s likely going to go back to the State of Play branding, which itself was inspired by Nintendo Direct. The rumours say Mark Cerny is working on a new game. No, not Knack 3! (He was behind the two Knack games!) In this video, we hear that Sony is going to have a tentpole franchise amongst the PlayStation 5 launch titles. In other words, such a successful IP that it might bring the console on its back for the launch period.

Cerny seems to be interested in the platformer genre. Without him, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro The Dragon would have likely never had their chance. (He was first the product development VP, then the president of Universal Interactive Studios, which he calls „a boutique publisher.” He supported both Naughty Dog and Insomniac Games to work on what they wanted to achieve.) He also was the designer on the Jak & Daxter series.

…and guess where we are going with this sentence. Naughty Dog has finished The Last of Us Part II, and they don’t need a full team to work on a PlayStation 5 version (because you can bet money on it happening), so the studio could go back to an older IP. After all, Insomniac Games is doing the same with Ratchet & Clank!

None of it it’s official yet, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it will be.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
