Based on the leaked footage of SEGA’s game, the first impression isn’t bad, but the Japanese publisher’s strategy is a little hard to follow.
It turns out that Jet Set Radio is getting two games at once. It’s been over half a year since the Japanese publisher announced that Jet Set Radio was in the pipeline alongside Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Golden Axe and Crazy Taxi. All of them will be revived by SEGA, and some of the IPs will have bigger budgets, but who knows how long we’ll have to wait for their proper announcement and unveiling.
Anyway, here is the first one, Jet Set Radio. First four pictures of it appeared on Twitter, then suddenly a 32-second montage was uploaded to YouTube (and we immediately did the obligatory thing and downloaded and uploaded it to a file-sharing site, so SEGA is trying in vain). The video shows an especially nice look at the Jet Set Radio Remake, which SEGA hasn’t said anything about yet, but the leaker says it’s a remake. The locations don’t quite match what we saw in the original SEGA Dreamcast version, but usually a remake doesn’t recreate everything 100% accurately… but even funnier is that one of the design documents has been leaked. This can’t be a joke, or if it is, they paid a lot of attention to detail.
Jet Set Radio Remake seems to be open world, while the original was not, and the person who leaked the images was recently exposed, as it turned out that Midori was not a Japanese lady, but someone pretending to be. The person believes that it is an early shot and that the game runs on Unreal Engine 5. But where’s the complication?
Last year SEGA announced a free-to-play reboot. This doesn’t look like it.
