A Group of Players Demand the Cancellation of Assassin’s Creed Shadows!

They want Ubisoft to cancel the project, formerly known as Assassin’s Creed: Red.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows was properly unveiled by the French publisher in May (when it was given its final name), and many people criticized Ubisoft for the two main characters in the game. However, a group of Japanese gamers who disagree with the historical authenticity of Assassin’s Creed Shadows and the lack of respect for the culture is another element that has been criticized. There is already a petition in Japanese on change.org asking Ubisoft to cancel the game.

“Recently, a serious issue of historical accuracy and lack of cultural respect has been raised about game developer Ubisoft’s upcoming release, Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The game is based on the Japanese samurai and ignores the fact that samurai are a higher class of samurai and are supposed to be “gokemono” or servants of nobility. In fact, the first European to receive the title of samurai, William Adams (Miura Anobori), was a 250 koku bannerman serving Tokugawa Ieyasu. Throughout this history, Ubisoft continues to misunderstand the nature and role of the samurai,” the petition states.

The group believes that the misunderstanding of the nature and role of their samurai is an insult to Japanese history and could even be interpreted as racism against Asian people. They demand that Ubisoft stop the development of Assassin’s Creed Shadows (they wrote “release”, but that’s still a few months away…), investigate thoroughly, and show respect for Japanese history and culture. More than 40,000 people have already signed the petition, with an initial goal of 35,000 signatures.

The petition probably won’t have any influence on what Ubisoft will do, since they won’t cancel the game (as they did with Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland). Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be released on November 12th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC.
