MOVIE NEWS – Clint Eastwood’s legendary western For a Fistful of Dollars is getting a remake. His announcement sparked outrage on social media, while another group of mourners wanted to see a particular actor in the lead role…
If nothing stands in the way, it looks like a remake of For a Fistful of Dollars will be ready soon. It was Sergio Leone’s first big spaghetti western, catapulting a legend like Clint Eastwood to Hollywood fame. So we are facing a new version of one of the classics in the history of cinema, and as expected, many people had a tantrum on Twitter at the news of the announcement.
“How can Hollywood be so obsessed with ruining old movies with unnecessary remakes?”, “That’s disrespectful. No thanks. If they want to come up with a sequel, fine, but remaking one should be a crime,” “There’s no need for a remake, the original is perfect” – we can read in several comments among the responses to the DiscussingFilm post.
A remake of a remake of Yojimbo
To be fair, Hollywood doesn’t have much to do with it. According to THR, the production company Euro Gang Entertainment promotes the remake of For a Fistful of Dollars. Although the latter is based in Los Angeles, it develops its European projects.
However, it is clear that the result that Clint Eastwood and Sergio Leone created with this film – itself an adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo – is difficult to surpass.
For a Fistful of Dollars was also the first part of the Dollar Trilogy, or “The Anonymous Man Trilogy”. He contributed to laying the foundations of the spaghetti western, while we could also listen to Ennio Morricone’s soundtrack. The film tells the story of an outsider gunslinger who pits two rival clans against each other in a border town torn by greed, pride and revenge. It is one of those rare cinemas whose two sequels – especially the final part of the trilogy, which is entitled The Good, the Bad and the Ugly – also managed to grow up to be successful.
Not a step without (Clint) Eastwood!
The idea of remaking For a Fistful of Dollars prompted the usual barrage of complaints that Hollywood can’t go more than a few months without resorting to reshoots of older films. If it were to happen, some fans believe that only one person could fill Eastwood’s shoes: his son, Scott Eastwood.
Hollywood is often called a nepotistic dream world, where one generation of actors follows another in the world of movies.
However, it often happens that these family relationships work against the discourse. In fact, they bring to success projects that would otherwise be buried. The possible casting of Scott Eastwood as his father seems like the only thing that could quell the outrage and get people behind the film before it even goes into production.
A remake of ‘A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS’ is in the works.
The original film launched the “spaghetti western” genre and also launched Clint Eastwood’s career.
