Astonishing Result: Would This Device Be the Best-Selling Hardware Accessory in the US in 2024?!

TECH NEWS – Circana analyst Mat Piscatella confirmed that PS Portal was the best-selling accessory of May – and of the entire year 2024.

More than half a year has passed since the release of PS Portal. This device acts as an extension of the PS5. It allows us to play games while the console is connected. Initially, this accessory received some criticism from players because the community expected a much more ambitious product regarding features. But at least Sony has released several updates to make PlayStation Portal easier to play away from home.

Still, what few expected was that PlayStation Portal became the best-selling video game add-on so far this year in the U.S. market in terms of dollar sales. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella also noted on his X/Twitter account that it was the top-selling product in the US in May. It seems to be a very successful device for Sony.

It turns out that PlayStation Portal sold so well that some countries the public snapped it up in no time!

Speculators took advantage of the temporary shortage of stock to make extra profit. The product was sold at an inflated price to interested players due to the hype. Fortunately, this situation was rectified by increasing the stocks. Moreover, PlayStation has confirmed that demand for the device continues to “exceed expectations”. All this indicates that PS Portal is on the right track.

The best-selling accessory of the year, PS Portal, “was not designed to be profitable”?!

Sony said after the product’s release that PS Portal was not designed to be profitable. Instead, they tried to increase the playing time of the PS5 with the help of the handheld console. Hideaki Nishino, senior vice president of Sony, said: “Instead of looking for profitability, we want to increase the playing time with PS5. If they can play anywhere, I think some people will definitely play more time on our system.” In addition, they also said that it is worth opening up to cloud-based gaming: “There are no technical limitations that prevent PlayStation Portal from enjoying cloud-based gaming.”
