MOZI HÍREK – The first international trailer for Anora has arrived – the dramatic comedy that won the Palme d’Or for Best Film at this year’s Cannes Film Festival is receiving rave reviews.
The title character (Mikey Madison) is an Uzbek-American stripper, who often entertains Russian-speaking clients at her boss’s request. One night, Vanya (Mark Eidelstein), the son of a powerful Russian oligarch, becomes her client. The young couple falls in love, elopes, and gets married, much to the dismay of Vanya’s parents.
Peter Debruge, the chief critic at Variety, says the film is about pairs: two cultures (Russian and American), two languages (Russian and English), and two currencies (money and sex).
The film is directed by Sean Baker, who has previously won 49 awards. His work often explores the lives of people living on the fringes of the American Dream. He frequently tells stories about prostitutes, aiming to destigmatize them. In Anora, critics are unanimously praising Mickey Madison’s performance as Oscar-worthy, and the film has a 98% rating on the RottenTomatoes review site.
