STEAM DECK NEWS – ShadPS4 is developing very fast, thanks to the same processor architecture as modern PCs.
The ShadPS4 emulator is still a long way from being ready, as it is still in development at version 0.1.1. Based on the two videos shared by GeorgeMoralis, we can already see Dark Souls Remastered loading, reaching the character creation screen, and even starting the intro movie. Of course, we don’t get to the gameplay, but it has to be said that this is already a great achievement, because ShadPS4 got here in a very short time.
In fact, the emulator has so much potential that it could soon be used in a portable format, so if you have a sufficiently powerful handheld PC, you can run ShadPS4 on it. This was done by MaliceSpeedwagon, who ran eight games in turbo mode on the Asus ROG Ally. Bloodborne won’t even boot, but he got the smaller games running. Sonic Mania and Undertale are already running great, so it’s now possible to make PlayStation 4 titles portable by running them locally (not from the cloud!).
This puts ShadPS4 in a better position than RPCS3. It’s a PS3 emulator that had a hard time because the console’s processor, the Cell, was almost impossible to emulate properly on the PC for years. Today, PS3 emulation is in a very good state, but if the development of PlayStation 4 emulation continues at this pace, it could catch up with the emulation quality of the previous generation in a short time. For what it’s worth, Sony (and Microsoft) switched to x86-64 in the previous console generation, and the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series have remained the same.
What we can say now, however, is that ShadPS4 could be at a stage where most games will be able to run on it within a year. Just don’t let Sony file a lawsuit against it…
