Two Rockstar Classics Almost Made It to Nintendo: What Happened?

Rockstar Games games are hard to pair with any of Nintendo’s consoles or handhelds, but two ports could have been made to either of the Big N’s hardware…

Time Extension reported on the two games that went bust. One was The Warriors, which was first released for PS2 and Xbox. 16 months later it made it to Sony’s handheld, the PSP. But there were plans for another platform in the meantime. A GBA port was in the works for almost a year and a half, according to former Rockstar developers who were aware of the ideas at the time. This port would have been made by Rockstar Leeds, then called Möbius Entertainment, and would have run on the same engine as the GBA port of Max Payne, which they also made (and, knowing the limitations of the platform, it was excellent).

Like Max Payne, it would have been a top-down action game (presumably with an isometric view) that would have also offered multiplayer entertainment for up to four players using the link cable. Möbius was almost finished with development, but in early 2005 Rockstar canceled the project to make a PSP version instead. One of the reasons for the cancellation was Rockstar’s poor sales on the major N platforms, and Nintendo would not have been much help in marketing mature, M-rated games, so it seemed logical to jump to the PSP while Sony’s first such attempt was gaining attention.

A few years later, the same studio (now Rockstar Leeds) began work on adapting Bully for the Nintendo DS. Work began immediately after the release of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (a game released in March 2009 for the DS/PSP duo). The DS version would have used the same overlay style as Bully, but they didn’t get very far because Rockstar put them on a bigger project. That’s when they started helping Team Bondi with LA Noire, and that’s probably why Bully DS ended up unfinished, and we’ve heard from several places that Bully 2 was canceled during that turbulent time.

Shame about them…
