What’s Holding Sony Back from Revealing the PlayStation 5 Pro?

Sony’s console is now seriously an open secret in the gaming industry, and all the company needs to do now is confirm to the public that a half-generation console update is indeed in development.

Three years after the release of the PlayStation 4, the PlayStation 4 Pro hit stores five days before its three-year anniversary, and the Xbox One was joined by the Xbox One X, originally announced as Project Scorpio. It follows that Sony and Microsoft may be taking the plunge this time around by launching a more powerful, presumably more expensive, version of the current console generation. In the case of Redmond, there is little chance of this happening, as Microsoft’s official position is that the Xbox Series X is a half-generation upgrade, only it was released at the same time as the base Xbox Series S… so we can take them out of the equation. But what about Sony?

In a month, month and a half, Sony MUST make a move. We say that because the PlayStation 4 Pro (and Slim) was announced in September 2016, two months before launch. So Sony doesn’t have much time left for a confirmation, presumably during a major Sony event, a PlayStation Showcase, rumored for September. There are already signs of this, with the name Trinity appearing in the graphics settings of a game, which is the codename for the PlayStation 5 Pro. We’ll have more on this later today.

If Sony is trying to be smart about this, it might as well unveil the PlayStation 5 Pro now. Its success will depend on the price, because in an unprecedented move for this generation of consoles, not only has the price not been cut, it has been RAISED, and the same goes for the PlayStation Plus subscription service, which has been expanded to three tiers.

However, Microsoft has something in store for Gamescom, where it will probably announce how Xbox Game Pass will be strengthened with Activision Blizzard games. But after that, in early September at the latest, Sony will have to sing, because if there are already Trinity references in the games, it’s just ridiculous.
