What Are the Chances of Marvel vs. Capcom Returning? The Producer Answers

With fighting games experiencing a bit of a renaissance these days, it’s no wonder audiences are wondering if Capcom might be reaching back into another franchise.

Shuhei Matsumoto, the producer of Street Fighter 6 and Marvel vs: Arcade Classics, talked about the Japanese publisher’s crossover franchise. Marvel vs. Capcom got a bigger boost in June when Capcom unveiled a collection to the public that builds on those older collaborations. The fighting game audience received the package well, as it includes seven games in one package.

In 2017, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, the current final installment of the franchise, was released after a troubled development that divided audiences, and it was a step down from Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, though the gameplay was mostly in place. And with the announcement of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection, it’s no wonder people are asking when the next installment in the franchise is coming, instead of a new collection.

In an interview with Dexerto, Matsumoto said that Capcom has big dreams and that there is a possibility for a new Marvel vs. Capcom or possibly a Capcom-based SNK game. The biggest hurdle, however, is that a new installment would require a lot of time and effort. In the short term, the collection seemed like a good way to release these older episodes because it would expose them to a new audience, and he thinks it’s a way for Capcom to show that they care about the series (it seems more like a survey of demand: if a lot of people buy it, they would rely on that to get the new episode).

Capcom and Disney (Marvel) have been talking about this for years, and the timing was all about this. Is it possible that Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will get a rollback netcode update (rolling back the “wrong” acts)? Matsumoto made the big dreamy comment about it again, and they’re taking it one step at a time…
