Is a New Nintendo Switch Accessory Hinting at the Capabilities of Its Successor?

The Japanese company hasn’t even unveiled the successor to the Nintendo Switch yet (the big N will do so soon), but an accessory for the current platform is already looking to the future.

Nintendo recently announced an accessory that lets you instantly charge two Joy-Cons so you don’t have to plug them into the Switch. This was the company’s first official charging stand, but there are similar products on the market that are licensed by Nintendo. So the first ‘in-house’ Joy-Con charging stand (Two-Way) could be a reference to one of the previously leaked features of the Switch 2 (not the official name!).

It’s a bit interesting that it took Nintendo over SEVEN YEARS to make their own charging station, but better late than never, and this could also be a hint at the Switch 2, which the official position is that it will be announced by March 2025, and we think it will be released by then. A lot has been rumored about the device. According to Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, the Switch successor will follow the shape and branding of the current device, but we’ve also heard that the big N might make some minor changes to the Joy-Cons.

We previously reported on what a Chinese manufacturer, Mobapad, wrote. According to them, the Joy-Con will be larger on the next hardware and will be connected to the console via a magnetic system. If this is true, then the current Joy-Cons will not be usable on the successor, but the release of the Joy-Con charging stand could be a stopgap solution to allow the old controllers to be used with the new hardware. There will also be backwards support: games and cartridges from the Switch will work with the successor, but this will not be the case in reverse, similar to the Nintendo 3DS – DS pair we saw earlier.

Nintendo’s new console is not official yet, as all the Japanese company has said so far is that it is in the pipeline and will be presented to the public by March, so this is just a rumor.
