STEAM DECK NEWS – The Asus ROG Ally update has brought more headaches than moments of comfort, so it may not be a good idea to install it.
Several users have complained that the Armory Crate Special Edition 1.5 update for handheld PCs is not a good idea to install. This software was released with the updated device, the ROG Ally X, but caused inconvenience to owners of the original model. The device is not based on Linux (the operating system of the Steam Deck is based on it), but on Windows 11, which is not tailored to the Asus machine. That’s why the Taiwanese company is putting together the Armory Crate program, which covers the interface on top of Windows, making the machine easier to use because you don’t need to connect a mouse and keyboard to it.
Armory Crate Special Edition 1.5 works perfectly on the Asus ROG Ally X, but not for owners of the base machine! The firmware update throws the machine into an endless installation loop (no software installation happens) and some inputs are not recognized. Tests have shown that mainly machines with AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme APUs are affected. How do I fix the problem caused by Armory Crate 1.5?

In Windows 11 desktop mode, locate the Armory Crate SE icon. Right-click it and select Settings. At the bottom of the menu, look for Reset, select it, and then restart. This will fix the error. However, machines with a simple Z1 APU are also affected. AMD Radeon Super Resolution does not work, the power (TDP) settings are missing, the machine keeps crashing, and switching between OS modes is also very slow. Users say that this is due to installation conflicts between the previous and current installation folders, but this can be fixed quickly.
So it’s better to be careful, but it’s also true that the Asus ROG Ally X is not a cheap machine, as we wrote when it was released.
