MOVIE NEWS – The Star Trek franchise bravely faces the future that a Broadway musical could mean…
The Star Trek franchise has come a long way since its debut in the 1960s. But with this project, you might really break into a strange, new world. As revealed at San Diego Comic-Con, the Star Trek franchise is considering a full musical stage show following the musical-inspired episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. While the project details are still very sketchy, Strange New Worlds executive producer Akiva Goldsman shared an exciting and unexpected update.
Like many one-off musical episodes before it, the Strange New Worlds Season 2 episode “Subspace Rhapsody” became an instant classic. Fans and critics alike spoke highly of it. The events of the episode unfold when an encounter with an experimental, naturally occurring quantum probability field prompts James T. Kirk and his companions to break into song to express their thoughts and feelings. The series has never delved into musical waters. The episode became so popular that at the Paramount panel at SDCC, a fan asked if there would be additional music in the series’ upcoming third season.
According to Goldsman, this should not happen, but a stage show was mentioned instead, to the dismay of fellow panellist Rebecca Romijn, who plays Una Chin-Riley in the series.
Romijn reacted to the statement: “Akiva, I can’t believe you just said that!”
The Star Trek franchise continues to expand
Star Trek had come a long way since its debut in 1966 when the space race made sci-fi stories about discovering new planets a massive draw for audiences. In addition to numerous television spin-offs and films, the franchise has expanded into comics, novels, animated series, video games, and more. It is no exaggeration that it has become one of the greatest franchises in history.
While fans wait for more news on whether the franchise might actually make the transition from the screen to the stage, the third season of Strange New Worlds will arrive on Paramount+ sometime in 2025. The first two seasons can already be streamed on the platform.
