Is PlayStation VR2’s Performance So Poor That a Big Price Cut Is Essential?

Although Sony’s next-generation virtual reality headset has been available since last year, the PlayStation VR2 just doesn’t look very good.

The PlayStation VR2 costs $550 in the US, so it’s essentially the same price as the PlayStation 5! Sure, you can use it with your PC, but you’ll have to buy a separate adapter for an extra $60 (and it’ll be available in August). Perhaps that’s why the device hasn’t sold so well so far, as several retailers have slashed the price of the product by 35%, selling the PlayStation VR2 for $350 instead of $550! At that price, it seems like a more realistic purchase, but it also makes Sony’s headset cheaper than the rival Meta Quest ($450). If Horizon: Call of the Mountain is included in the PSVR2 bundle, it’s $400.

The PlayStation VR2 also made the same mistake as the PlayStation Vita: it simply didn’t get major games on a regular basis, so the lack of support could have hurt sales. The lack of retroactive support is also not good, as it makes games bought for the first PlayStation VR unusable on the new device. In June, Sony cut funding and development time for the PlayStation VR2, meaning that future games will not be supported for the headset. This essentially puts the device on death row, even though the hardware itself received good reviews at the time.

Android Central has reported that Sony is slashing its development budget for VR games, leaving very little chance of virtual reality games being developed. So the company essentially wrote off the device. It failed. Game over. And the reason behind that is almost certainly the price. Had Sony released a cheaper headset, it might have had a better starting point.
