Why Didn’t Larian Continue Baldur’s Gate? The Head of the Studio Answers!

Swen Vincke gave a fair explanation as to why they didn’t get serious about the fourth episode after Baldur’s Gate 3.

The Belgium-based team had plans for Baldur’s Gate 4. Vincke told PCGamer more details about it. According to him, when something is extremely successful, it’s understandable that many people wonder if there will be more of the same, and they’ve been asked the question “When are you going to make the next one? Except that, as developers, they have spent many, many hours in that tiny, pathetic cave, and when they come out after the project is finished, they have become somewhat vulnerable.

Originally, Larian didn’t want to make Baldur’s Gate 4, they wanted to expand on the third part because that was the easiest way to go. The engine was in place and everything was ready to implement additional content. The pace was fast because the “production machine” was still hot, but eventually the project was reworked into a new game because they thought it would be worth it to work on an expansion for three years. But then the same thing happened with Baldur’s Gate 4, and eventually the team decided it would be better to move on to something else, but the game was already partially playable, and Vincke said the audience would have really loved a new episode of the D&D-based IP.

So there were plans, but Larian wanted to do something else. You can’t take away from the fact that Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the best RPGs ever released. The game is also available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC, and the only way to strengthen that would be to make a port for the yet-to-be-announced successor to the Nintendo Switch.

So we shouldn’t expect a sequel from them.
