Could a Major SEGA Franchise Shift Towards Strategy?

It could be that the genre itself will be Strategy, but something from another IP is in the works at the Japanese publisher, which trademarked a name on July 26.

So it took a week for it to be made public, but that’s not important, because usually registering a name doesn’t mean that something will come of it. Just think of Capcom’s long-lost Souls clone. Does anyone else remember Deep Down, which was announced as a PlayStation 4 exclusive? Well, at least we got to see some of it, but we’re not there yet for the SEGA-branded Yakuza Wars…

With the name Yakuza Wars, you might think that this is some kind of RTS based on the Yakuza franchise. There is a twist to this, as the franchise could now be called Like A Dragon, and this name could still be a reference to Like A Dragon 9, which is already in the works. It could be the subtitle. Another idea is that Creative Assembly is working on a Total War game, which could be a slight Japanese twist on the franchise. After all, the name could easily bring that to mind. But we’ve already had Total War: Shogun, but that was set in a slightly earlier historical period. Perhaps they want to make a full-fledged game out of the mini-game seen in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth?

If we’re lucky, SEGA might reveal something about the project during the Tokyo Game Show in the fall, because this is a Japanese publisher and there’s no way they’re going to miss the event. And the timing makes sense, as they could release this new game with the name already trademarked by the time of the announcement. It doesn’t make much sense to speculate about when it will be released or on which platforms, because right now we only know a name and nothing else, so it’s really all speculation.

Whatever Yakuza Wars is, it’s going to be something surprising. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has already hinted that the new Like A Dragon will surprise us. And it’s easy to connect the two dots.
