Sony Santa Monica is doing something behind the scenes that Sony should be talking about soon, and we might hear about it officially at the rumored PlayStation Showcase in September (as well as the long-rumored but as-yet-unannounced PlayStation 5 Pro).
Sony Santa Monica is the studio working on one of PlayStation Studios’ upcoming franchises. The 2018 God of War reboot was followed by a sequel, God of War: Ragnarök, but now a new IP is in the works behind the team’s back. God of War director Cory Barlog previously expressed his desire to start a new franchise after directing the God of War reboot, but at the time he said that Sony would have to be convinced, but a LinkedIn resume of Sony’s Santa Monica character supervisor surfaced on the ResetEra forum, and from it we learned that Barlog’s dream may have come true.
His resume includes God of War, God of War: Ragnarok, and then he moved to Striking Distance Studios to work on The Callisto Protocol. He then worked on Unknown Worlds, a new installment of Subnautica, before returning to Sony where he was given the opportunity to oversee character development for a new IP.
Keep in mind that Barlog was not the director of God of War: Ragnarök, which was released for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 in the fall of 2022, but only the producer, and he was already working on this new IP. So we really don’t have to wait much longer for its release. Sony Santa Monica hasn’t left the God of War franchise behind, though, as it seems there are two teams at the studio. One is working on the third part of the God of War reboot and the other is working on Cory Barlog’s dream project.
But none of this is official yet. Sony will probably announce the new IP this year, because it’s about time.
