MOVIE NEWS – We can finally see some scenes from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the up-and-coming Game of Thrones spin-off series.
The first official footage of Game of Thrones’ unexpected spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has been released. Starring former professional rugby player Peter Claffey, the new series follows Ser Duncan the Tall as he tries his luck at the Ashford jousting tournament. The new series takes place about 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones and, despite the seemingly insignificant story, will drastically change the future of Westeros. It will land exclusively on the Max streaming platform next June, if everything is true.
In a new featurette released by HBO (which you can watch below), Game of Thrones fans get their best look yet at Claffey as Dunk, aka “Ser Duncan the Tall.” The footage also features Dunk’s loyal gun bearer, Egg, played by Dexter Sol Ansell. Despite the novella’s short length, HBO planned three seasons of Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Future seasons will likely adapt Martin’s two other novellas following Ser Duncan.
Casting the role of Ser Duncan the Tall was no easy task for showrunner Ira Parker.
The chosen actor had to not only embody the personality of Ser Duncan, but also rise above all the other characters in the series. As a result, Peter Claffey seems like the perfect choice. Former professional Rugby Union player Claffey is no stranger to physicality, and new footage shows his strength as he sends an opponent to the floor with a single punch. Alongside Claffey, the new series also stars Tanzyn Crawford, Bertie Carvel, Finn Bennett, Daniel Ings and Sam Spruell, alongside the aforementioned Dexter Sol Ansell.
What is this Game of Thrones spin-off about?
While Game of Thrones featured the most powerful houses in Westeros vying for the Iron Throne, and House of the Dragon explores the civil war that led to the downfall of House Targaryen, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms feels significantly smaller in scale. A much more personal story, the series follows Dunk, a former pauper who, as a gunsmith, dons the armour of his deceased master and pretends to be a knight. In pursuit of fame and glory, Ser Duncan the Tall sets out to compete in a tournament in the city of Ashford, which includes Prince Baelor Targaryen…
As a series set between the events of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, HBO executives previously stated that they did not want A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to distract from the channel’s two biggest series set in Martin’s universe. The next seasons of the series will fill the gap between the future seasons of House of the Dragon and the other upcoming Game of Thrones spin-offs.
