Sony’s next-generation virtual reality headset is designed differently from the first model, so even in this aspect there is a significant difference between the two PlayStation VRs.
A Japanese publication, AV Watch, tested the PlayStation VR2 and its adapter to connect Sony’s headset to a PC. During the test, Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed that the company designed the VR headset with PC support in mind from the start. Of course, the same cannot be said for the first model.
When the PlayStation VR2 finally hit the shelves, Sony focused on optimizing the VR experience on the PlayStation 5 before moving on to PC support. This will happen this week (available from today for €60, or around 24-25 thousand forints), as the adapter will arrive with the headset. According to AV Watch’s test, the headset meets the requirements of PC VR, but the quality is not outstanding, as the image quality doesn’t seem to be that good. As a reminder, the PC system requirements are listed:
PlayStation VR2 PC System Requirements
- Operating system: Windows 10 x64/Windows 11 (no version number given)
- Processor: Intel Core i5-7600/AMD Ryzen 3 3100 (Zen 2 or higher architecture required)
- Memory: 8GB of RAM
- Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 (minimum Turing architecture required) or RTX/AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT/RX 6500 XT
- Recommended graphics card: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 or higher/AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT or higher
- DisplayPort: DP 1.4 (at least one standard DisplayPort or mini DisplayPort output required)
- USB: Direct connection only
- Bluetooth: 4.0 minimum (some adapters may not work)
- Steam: PlayStation VR2 and SteamVR applications
So Sony has now taken a different approach to the headset, for which the company refuses to disclose sales results. They’ve also reportedly put VR development on hold, so things don’t look good for PlayStation VR2.
