Nintendo’s next-generation console is still waiting to be announced, and we’re likely to be in this position for a few more months…
Hideki Yasuda, an analyst at Tokyo Security, has published a new report on when he thinks we can expect the as-yet-unnamed new hardware, and how much we’ll have to pay for it. Yasuda says that Switch 2 (not sure if that’s what it’ll be called) will hit stores in the first half of 2025, which is in line with what we’ve heard so far, although we also recently reported that the platform could be delayed again, as we first heard it was fall of 2024, from there it could be moved to the first quarter of 2025, and now we’re hearing that Switch 2 will debut in the first half of 2025, which is the time frame Yasuda mentioned.
So the analyst is also looking at the second quarter of 2025, so it’s likely that the Nintendo Switch 2 will debut between April and June. Yasuda estimated $500, so that’s probably what you’ll be able to buy the next-gen hardware from the big N. It’s not that cheap anymore. For comparison, the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017 for $300/€330.
Nintendo, of course, is keeping quiet about the new platform. The reveal is being delayed as long as possible, and since the Switch’s March launch was preceded by its October unveiling, we’ll probably have to wait that long for information from the big N. We can only pray that they don’t follow the naming scheme of the Wii’s successor, because Switch U sounds really stupid. (Super Switch? The successor to the NES, the SNES, went the same way…)
None of this is official yet, but what can be said without a doubt is that the pricing of the Switch successor will also determine how this platform will take off.
