Final Fantasy: Will PC Players Face Shorter Wait Times in the Future?

According to the director of Final Fantasy XVI, it is not out of the question that the franchise will be released simultaneously on consoles and PC in the future, underlining Square Enix’s multiplatform strategy.

In an interview with Gamesradar, Final Fantasy XVI director Hiroshi Takai talked about why the game was released on PC much later than PlayStation 5. Is it possible that both platforms will get the new episode at the same time? He says it’s possible, or even more likely, but it’s usually up to the team working on the project to decide, so it’s just his opinion. If what Takai said is true, it’s really surprising that it’s the developers themselves who decide on console exclusivity, and not management who ultimately overrides the decisions.

That’s probably why they have some influence. And Takai’s view, while his own, may actually be in line with Square Enix’s, as the Japanese publisher said in their financial report that they want to focus on quality rather than quantity, and part of that is to aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy. So they don’t really want to have to wait 1-1.5 years for the PC version of their PlayStation 5 game anymore.

There’s Final Fantasy XVI, which will be coming to PC soon (we’ve already covered the system requirements), but let’s not forget Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. This is also currently only available for PlayStation 5, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Sony ends up throwing a ton of money at Square Enix to make the third installment of Final Fantasy VII Remake a timed exclusive on its PlayStation platform. The problem is that Square Enix is at war with PC ports. The Intergrade conversion of Final Fantasy VII Remake was good, but not perfect.

If the PC port of Final Fantasy XVI is decent, it could be the deciding factor for Square Enix to make their next game available on PlayStation and Xbox as well.
