Will Space Marine 2 Contain Microtransactions?! Saber Interactive Director Calms Tempers

Space Marine 2 monetization “will not be onerous,” says Tim Willits, and paid DLC will be cosmetic only.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is coming out in less than two weeks and is sure to be one of the biggest games of 2024. However, there are aspects of Saber Interactive’s TPS that we don’t yet see clearly. Examples include monetization and the presence of microtransactions. The creative director of the studio, Tim Willits, who was one of the key figures in the early DOOM games, reflected on this.

In an interview with Rock, Paper, Shotgun, the current head of Saber Directive also addressed the issue of monetization of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. To give context to the upcoming announcements, Willits, formerly studio director at id Software (DOOM, Quake), said (per Gamesradar): “There are shifts and trends in the industry.”

“People don’t want to be sold horse armor anymore. I can say that because I worked at Bethesda,” he said.

He also points out that “Our fans never thought we ripped them off in World War Z.” This horse-armored reference comes from The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, which is considered the beginning of micropayments in video games. However, the game’s official FAQ mentions, “There aren’t any microtransactions in Space Marine 2. No in-game cash shop. All gameplay content and features will be free to all players. Any paid DLCs will be cosmetic only.”

What can we expect from Space Marine 2?

Fortunately, those who have already tried Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 say that it is one of the most impressive triple-A games they have played this generation. Many believe that this title boasts incredible visuals. Of course, this wouldn’t be worth much if it weren’t for the improved combat, which has mechanics like parrying and combos.

One of the aspects that players will be able to enjoy like never before is the endless hordes of enemies to face in melee or ranged weapons. The replayability aspect comes in the form of the 3-player co-op mode, where you can enjoy the missions together with your friends. The game will be released on September 9.
