Todd Phillips Knew that the Joker’s Most Iconic Lines Would Become a Legend

MOVIE NEWS – Director Todd Phillips had a feeling that one particular line from Joker would become an instant classic among fans, long before the film snagged two Oscars. The upcoming sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, promises to dive even deeper into Arthur Fleck’s twisted journey.

Phillips’ vision for Joker redefined the character, transforming him from a mere comic book villain into a complex figure haunted by inner demons. The film not only broke records as the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever (until Deadpool and Wolverine came along) but also claimed two Oscars, with a nod for Best Picture.

In an interview with Variety, Phillips reflected on the impact of his movies, particularly Joker. Unlike many directors who are unsure which moments will resonate with audiences, Phillips was confident about one line in particular. He revealed, “I knew right away that the line ‘I used to think that my life was a tragedy, but now I realize it’s a f**king comedy,’ was going to be huge. Scott Silver and I wrote it together, and it just stood out. Even Joaquin loved it, which is rare because he’s usually his toughest critic.”

Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix Weren’t Ready to Say Goodbye to Arthur Fleck

Joaquin Phoenix will return as Arthur Fleck in Joker: Folie à Deux, which picks up two years after the events of the first film, where Gotham’s citizens continue to wreak havoc in the name of Joker. Arthur’s path crosses with Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga, setting the stage for a dark and twisted relationship.

Phillips shared that both he and Phoenix were reluctant to let go of the character after the first movie wrapped. He recalled, “When we finished Joker, there was a real sense of unfinished business. Joaquin and I weren’t ready to say goodbye to Arthur Fleck. It wasn’t the typical feeling of relief you get when a movie wraps; there was a deep sadness, like we hadn’t fully explored his story.”

Joker: Folie à Deux is set to hit theaters on October 4, 2024. Check out the latest trailer below:
