MOVIE NEWS – Jennifer Lawrence revealed that she was warned by none other than superstar Adele to avoid starring in the 2016 sci-fi romance Passengers. Despite its initial critical failure, the film has recently gained unexpected popularity on Prime Video. Lawrence, who starred opposite Chris Pratt, now reflects on the decision with regret, admitting that she should have heeded Adele’s advice.
In Passengers, set aboard a spacecraft transporting thousands of colonists in hypersleep, Pratt’s character faces a moral dilemma after waking up early. Struggling with the prospect of growing old alone, he decides to wake another passenger, played by Lawrence, sparking a controversial love story. Despite the film’s $303 million box office success, critics were less than impressed, leaving the film with a disappointing 30% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Reflecting on the film’s reception, Lawrence admitted in a 2022 interview with The New York Times that she was initially surprised by the negative reviews. She remarked, “I was like, ‘Oh no, you guys are here because I’m here, and I’m here because you’re here. Wait, who decided that this was a good movie?’” When asked which movie left her feeling this way, she candidly responded, “Passengers, I guess.”
Lawrence, who had recently returned to Hollywood after a brief hiatus, acknowledged that she should have taken Adele’s advice to steer clear of the project. “Adele told me not to do it! She was like, ‘I feel like space movies are the new vampire movies.’ I should have listened to her,” Lawrence said. She further explained that at the time, she was reacting rather than acting, feeling more like a celebrity than an artist, cut off from her creativity.
Although Passengers was not a complete disaster, it failed to meet expectations. Lawrence’s dissatisfaction with the project is understandable, especially considering her impressive filmography before and after its release. Despite the film’s resurgence on Prime Video, the actress’s reflections on the experience highlight the importance of trusting one’s instincts—or in this case, the instincts of a trusted friend.
