Will Nintendo Raise the Bar for Licensed Controllers?

In the yet-to-be-announced successor to the Nintendo Switch, the Japanese company may be expecting something extra from manufacturers who want to produce licensed controllers.

Nintendo’s next console is almost an open secret, as the Switch 2 (the name is not official yet, as the big N hasn’t revealed the platform yet and presumably won’t do so until around October) is expected to be released in the next few months. Sony will announce its unannounced half-gen update, the PlayStation 5 Pro, at least in September, as it has long been rumored that there will be a PlayStation Showcase where the company will announce its next games as well as the console…

Speaking of controllers, we read on Reddit that Nintendo is expecting a little more from manufacturers for the Switch 2. Although they didn’t name the exact manufacturer, according to one of their longtime partners, the Japanese company already requires them to include a gyroscope, so Nintendo has made additional demands on them. Motion sensing could therefore be a mandatory technology in officially licensed controllers for next-generation hardware, which in turn could come with a higher price tag. (We’ve already written about this for the Switch 2, as a possible price has already emerged for the platform, which is reportedly facing another delay).

The gyroscope is already used in several Nintendo Switch games, and according to the unnamed manufacturer, this is the first time Nintendo has requested that it be used for new licensed accessories, so the Japanese company is trying to raise the bar on quality. Of course, Joy-Cons are supposed to prevent drifting, so Hall effect analog levers should be pressed, but they are not as cheap technology, but much more durable.

None of this is official yet. The Nintendo Switch 2 is rumored to be released in the second quarter of 2025, and not in the first three months of the year.
