Avowed Art Director: ‘Xbox Series X Outperforms PC!’

He’s probably just saying that because he’s working at a Microsoft studio on the first-person RPG we’ve already written, which won’t have a great frame rate on the console.

Matt Hansen, Avowed’s art director, confirmed during Gamescom that the Xbox series will only run Avowed at 30 FPS. This was already controversial, but in an interview with Windows Central he tried to stir the pot further by saying that he thinks Avowed often runs better on Xbox Series X than on PC!

“We’ve been developing for both Xbox and PC all along. But honestly, one of the things that surprised me the most was that we realized early on in development that the Xbox Series X often runs better than the PC. The console runs Avowed really, really well. We didn’t have to have as many specific affordances for the Xbox. We’re still figuring out the specs for the Xbox Series S, just because it doesn’t have some of the bells and whistles on the back end, but we have an amazingly skilled engineering team.

We’re so focused right now on polishing the content that we have and doing all the performance stuff at the same time, because that always comes at the end… So a lot of that stuff is hard to pin down right now. We’re figuring out all the components of ray tracing that we want to use on the Xbox, but there will definitely be elements of it. Using ray tracing is one of those things where there are 12 different components of it that you can choose to use or not use,” Hansen said.

At Gamescom, Nvidia announced that Avowed will also support ray tracing and DLSS 3 on PC. The blog post only mentioned RT reflections, so presumably the two Xbox Series consoles will only get so much at a lower resolution for performance. Anyway, the game has been delayed so it won’t be out this year; it will be released on February 18, 2025 for Xbox Series and PC. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass.
