While that’s the first thought that comes to mind, as the unfinished StarCraft spin-off was headed in that direction, it’s also possible that something completely different was born behind the gates of Blizzard Entertainment.
Not long after Microsoft closed the $68.7 billion deal that made Activision the king of Blizzard, they immediately laid off about 1,900 people. They also canceled a game that Blizzard had been working on. It had been in development for years, and survival was the main factor. Meanwhile, Diablo IV, World of Warcraft: The War Within, and Overwatch 2 are in development at the company. But a post from one of the studio’s executives suggests that another secret project is in the works…
Blizzard is working on a combination of RPG and FPS. And Chris McCabe hinted at it on his LinkedIn profile. The Overwatch 2 product manager (and senior director of product management at Blizzard in general) didn’t say exactly what IP this mysterious project is based on, but from what we know so far, it’s being developed for PC and consoles (PlayStation 5 too?) and has a big budget. McCabe has also worked on the unannounced survival game, and this new RPG-FPS concept has been linked to his name since June.
Previously, Blizzard had a canceled MMO shooter called Titan. The first part of Overwatch was based on it. So it wouldn’t be a big surprise if Blizzard’s recently canceled survival game was somehow connected to the RPG-FPS project. If we’re only hearing about it now, it’ll certainly be several years before it’s finished (if it’s finished at all…), and by then it could be on the shelves of next-gen consoles.
Whatever the outcome of this project, it sounds exciting. All we can do now is wait to see if more information emerges.
