MOVIE NEWS – Sebastian Stan plays Donald Trump in the first clip of The Apprentice.
The first clip for the upcoming Donald Trump biopic starring Sebastian Stan has been officially released, in which the actor does his best impersonation of the former president. The Apprentice follows Trump’s rise as a real estate tycoon in the 70s and 80s, joined by his mentor Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong), a sleazy prosecutor and political fixer, and his ex-wife Ivana (Maria Bakalova). In the just-published one-minute clip, we can see Stan, who plays Trump, for the first time, playing the former president in a scene that reveals the origin of his characteristic, exaggerated speaking style.
In the official clip released, Donald Trump is riding in a vehicle alongside Roy Cohn, who is coaching him over a phone conversation with what is believed to be a real estate agent. At the time, Trump was still shaping the aesthetics of his business persona, which, according to The Apprentice, was directly influenced by his mentor, Cohn. Arguably the most exciting part of the scene is that Stan doesn’t try to imitate Trump’s voice one-for-one. Watch the clip at the end of the article!
The movie title The Apprentice references the reality show that Trump starred in for years.
However, it also suggests that the central theme of the film deals with Trump’s early career stage. Trump is portrayed as having been mentored by Roy Cohn, making him a literal apprentice. It is a kind of origin story film that also draws attention to the broader state of American affairs.
How big a scandal will the Donald Trump movie cause?
It’s no secret that even though director Ali Abbasi doesn’t like to refer to the film as a “political assassination”, Donald Trump doesn’t want the film to come out. Trump and his legal team have tried unsuccessfully to get the movie cancelled or at least moved from its scheduled release in mid-October. The controversial film, which includes a scene in which Trump rapes his ex-wife Ivana, comes just before the US election. Unsurprisingly, The Apprentice is surrounded by heightened anticipation.
The film is scheduled to hit US theatres on October 11. The international screenings start not long after. However, it will probably only be seen on a limited basis. According to Variety, the producers of The Apprentice have launched a Kickstarter campaign to help finance the longer theatrical release. It’s not often that a movie with a Hollywood star like Sebastian Stan needs crowdfunding to make it to theatres. This also shows the controversial nature of The Apprentice.
