The creators of Star Wars Outlaws are making “numerous improvements” to both the base game and future DLC.
Many Star Wars fans jumped headfirst into the new Star Wars Outlaws to re-immerse themselves in the world of George Lucas’ saga. However, impressions surrounding Ubisoft’s latest large-scale release are pretty mixed. Many players enjoy Kay Vess’s adventures, but some feel that the game still has room for improvement. And Massive Entertainment is fully aware of these criticisms from the community.
Star Wars Outlaws creative director Julian Gerighty and title director Mathias Karlson addressed this question in an interview with GamesRadar+. “I’m a little disappointed with the Metacritic [where it received a rating of 76 out of 100]; recognition from critics is very important to us, but I do think players are really connecting with what we did,” said Gerighty. “We had a very ambitious target, we literally reached for the stars, and I think we were successful from so many different angles. There’s a magical, unique experience within Outlaws, whether it’s Star Wars or not.”
Pros have seen players use Photo Mode a lot. From their point of view, this proves how much the community loves the world that Massive Entertainment has built. However, there are still many aspects of the experience that need to be improved: “I think Outlaws has such long legs that this will be a game that millions of people are going to play for years and years, and we’re never going to stop improving it… well, okay, that’s a lie, we’ll probably stop improving it eventually,” he laughs, adding, “but today my mind is not on stopping.”
“One of the things we can see through data is that elements aren’t working as well as we would like them to,” admits Gerighty.
Taking an early mission in Mirogana as an example. “One of the earliest missions in Mirogana is incredibly punishing and, for me, that is a mistake – and it’s something that we’re going to work on improving.” – he continues. “We would change the context so that people can enjoy these moments as much as possible. We’re not sticking to that concept […] It’s something we want to do, but if it doesn’t work, and if the data supports it – that it’s not just anecdotal, your experience or my experience – then we would absolutely go back to those moments .”
Massive Entertainment isn’t going to “let go” of Star Wars Outlaws anytime soon
As a result, Massive Entertainment is still working to polish Outlaws as much as possible. “I’m still working on it, Mathias is still working on it – we’re pushing a lot of improvements,” adds Gerighty. “Not just on the base game, but it’s things that we’re going to deliver later this year and next with the downloadable episodes we’re creating. They are heavily themed, pushing a certain aspect of the game that we have even further.”
“We’ve got such a great system, there’s a great foundation. It’s not as easy as it looks, because everything is level designed and that’s a lot of work, but there’s so much we can do there.” So expect Star Wars Outlaws to receive quite a few updates in the future. “We just don’t want to let it go. They’re going to have to kick us out the door!”
