Astro Bot Director Reveals Secret to Success: Fun Over Length

“It’s much more valuable than 40 hours,” says Astro Bot’s director. He gives the key to success, stating he prefers “12-15 hours of fun.” Astro Bot has quickly risen to become the highest-rated game of 2024.

Nicolas Doucet, the director of Astro Bot, shared his philosophy on creating a successful game. He emphasizes that a shorter but more enjoyable experience is preferable to a longer one that feels like a chore. “Having something that lasts between 12 and 15 hours of condensed fun, where not even five minutes feel too long or missing something, is much more valuable than 40 hours where you want to skip certain moments,” he explains.

“Being able to be okay with that, it kind of keeps things under control,” he adds (via Gamesradar). In a separate interview with VGC, Doucet discussed the importance of differentiating Astro Bot from other PlayStation studio games, which led to its bright, innocent style that appeals to all ages. “At Team Asobi, we decided that we wanted to fill that gap. That’s where we really want to be: all-ages, colorful, etc. Even if we make a horror game, it would be a fun horror game.”
